Day 39- Roma!-Friday-3/11/11

Woo who!! The weekend finally!!! Becky comes tomorrow!! Wow this week went by sooo fast :)  I can't wait for tomorrow!! Woo who!! I sent Becky last minute stuff and told her I would meet her by the bookstore in Termini keeping my fingers crossed she can find it and meet me tomorrow with no phone!  Yikes!  I'm a little nervous, but I have faith she will figure it out :)

I slept in this morning and then walked to school by 11am because I had to get some slides from our library and I didn't want it to close on me because they are only open until one of Friday's.  It was really weird walking to school because the buses were on strike today so there were no buses on the street/ no cars even on the street by school because it was closed down for a protest parade.  It was really kind of creepy how quiet it was.  After I got my slides I grabbed a smoothie and went to meet Jodine.  We were going to go shopping and to a museum today.

By the time we got out the door and on our way the parade had begun so we kind of got distracted watching that for a little bit and snapping a few photos of our first protest parade.  It was really interesting.  I guess it happens quite a bit, I'm glad my art teacher warned me about it to be prepared ahead of time not to take the bus at all today and I'm glad that Becky comes in tomorrow, not that she's getting here by bus, but just in case something were to happen with the trains too.

We walked slowly back towards my place because that's where Jodine thought the museum was.  We took awhile avoiding main streets and walking the side ones.  We got hungry and decided to stop for lunch.  A panini and veggies :)  It was really good and actually took our tickets and everything!  After we decided to walk to my place first and google exactly where the museum was and ask Molly if she wanted to come since those two got the tickets free from their class.

We had to wait for Molly's laundry to finish so she could jump in the shower and everything so after looking up where the museum Jodine and I took a short cat nap while we were waiting.  It was refreshing.  We woke back up around 5pm and just as we were about to head out the door at 5:15/5:30ish I received a phone call from my mom.

I immediately thought it was about my dog, Drake, being old, I was expecting that he had passed.  I was wrong.  Waaay wrong.  My mom told me my Grandpa Heaslip had passed away from a heart attack the night before on vacation in Hawaii.  I couldn’t believe it.  He was so healthy, so vibrant, and happy.  I was not expecting news like this at all.  I had to turn around and go sit down for a little bit in my room because the tears were streaming.  I had prepared myself for an animal death, but definitely not for a human death.  I felt terrible that I couldn't be there with my family, to hug and hold them.  I felt awkward because I had only known Jodine and Molly since the beginning of this trip and I had just lost a family member, how was I supposed the act around them?

Luckily, my friend Molly came over and gave me a long hug.  I tried to brush it off and not bring them down.  I didn't want to sit in my apartment after that, we had planned to go to the museum and we were going to go.  My legs felt like jello the entire time and my mind was racing.  I can't remember half of what we saw, it was Greek gods and goddess statues and mosaics, but reading about them went over my head.

I am thankful my mom was able to call me and tell me the news rather than hearing it through an email or text, but I would have much rather heard it in person.  My thoughts & prayers go out to Grandpa Heaslip's entire family tonight, especially my step-dad Gerry, Grandma Marge, Aunt Linda, Uncle Bob, Mike & Matt.  May your happy memories flood over your weeping hearts.  For as long as I have known Grandpa Jim he has always been a positive and happy man and I'm sure he would like you to carry on in happiness, paving the way to greatness, just as he did all his life :)
